Sustainability, Innovation and the Future of Wood Processing - Lithuania

On November 28 in Kaunas, our partners Lietuvos inovacijų centras / Lithuanian Innovation Centre (LIC) hosted the event: “New Directions: Sustainability, Innovation and the Future of Wood Processing”

The presentations discussed the latest EU regulatory trends introducing stricter requirements for material recycling and selective demolition, showcased wood reuse solutions widely applied in Denmark and other EU countries, as well as KTU researchers’ studies focused on ecological binders and low-CO₂ construction materials.

A lot of attention was also drawn to innovations in the digitalization of the construction sector. Kaunas University of Technology together with Staticus demonstrated how BIM, IoT, digital twins, and material passports can transform building design, operation, and renovation.

💡Important takeaways from the event:
🔸 The selective demolition obligation coming into force in 2025 will significantly increase the volume of high-quality recycled wood on the market, giving Lithuania additional opportunities to strengthen its position in the wood processing value chain.
🔸 BIM, IoT, and digital twins are becoming important tools that help manage real-time energy consumption, plan renovations, and ensure a sustainable building life cycle.
🔸 KTU research shows that alkali-activated materials can reduce CO₂ emissions 6–8 times while also using industrial waste and by-products.
🔸 STATICUS practice shows that sustainability encompasses the entire process chain—from design and production to operation and solutions adapted for disassembly, including timber-hybrid structures and material passports.

The event demonstrated that by combining circular resources, advanced low-CO₂ materials, digital management tools, and science–business synergy, real change can be achieved.

Thanks to everyone who participated, and a special thanks to our speakers for their excellent insights and ideas! Gytis Junevičius, Fabia Baumann, Paulius Spūdys, Danute Vaiciukynieneė, Hossein rahmani, Irina Nikitina.

It is encouraging to see Lithuania moving toward a more advanced, sustainable, and competitive future in construction!
