What is holding circular construction back?

A new study from our partner asked polish construction companies about the benefits and barriers they experience when working with secondary materials.

The environmental benefits of reusing and recycling construction materials are widely recognised. But getting those materials back into new buildings is still far from simple.

A new study from our Circular South Baltic partner, the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, asked construction companies in Poland’s West Pomeranian region about the benefits and barriers they experience when working with secondary materials.

One challenge stands out as particularly important. There is still no effective marketplace connecting supply and demand for secondary construction materials.

Companies also point to difficulties with sorting construction and demolition waste, complex bureaucracy and uncertainty around access to suitable materials.

The findings show that circular construction is not only about companies being willing to change. It also requires the right infrastructure, regulation and market conditions to make reuse work in practice.

The article offers recommendations for construction companies, designers and local policymakers – and provides valuable knowledge for our shared work in Circular South Baltic.
